About: Matt Jones
As a young bloke I was lucky enough to have a boat obsessed father. My younger years were spent fishing and exploring the fantastic Hauraki Gulf where I learnt to fish, fillet, row, swim, bail, pull start an outboard, clean the bilges and became a dab hand with a piece of sandpaper. This nautical childhood ingrained a deep passion for the ocean, fishing, diving and all things boating.
These days I'm a freelance marine photographer and journalist who specialises in high quality imagery, entertaining yet informative magazine articles, boat reviews and video for the marine industry.
As my long-suffering wife will tell you (she gets seasick) when I'm not shooting/testing boats I'm trying to dodge the chores to escape, on or under the water,
to enjoy a couple of my favourite pastimes - fishing and
diving - all in the name of feeding the family of course.
With over 100 articles published since 2010; I've photographed and reviewed a vast range of vessels from 3 metre dinghies with a couple
of zeros on the price tag, through to 10m+ launches with price tags that will make your eyes water.
But no matter the boat's design brief each assignment is approached
with the same amount of passion, knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication that brings stunning
results every time.
Now that my two sons are
old enough to hold their own fishing rods I'm thoroughly enjoying teaching
them the art of catching their own dinner. The more excuses to head out on the water the better I say.
Make the most of any excuse to get out on the water,
